TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian task force on the handling of COVID-19, Achmad Yurianto, on Monday argues that it is irrelevant to compare Indonesia’s coronavirus confirmed cases total tally to China’s.

“It is irrelevant to compare Indonesia to the source of the virus. Cases happen because of human-to-human infection, not between countries,” said Yurianto to Tempo on Monday, July 20.

Yurianto questioned why Indonesia’s COVID-19 cases are not compared to India, Brazil, or the United States, as he sees the three countries have logged a significant amount of confirmed cases compared to Indonesia.

Moreover, he asserts that it is much more important to focus on how to overcome the pandemic rather than questioning the source of the virus.

On July 9, Indonesia recorded 86,521 COVID-19 cases according to Worldometers.info. This ranks Indonesia 25th globally in terms of the total tally while China is one position below in 26th with a total tally of 83,682 confirmed cases.

The three most devastated countries with the highest number cases due to the virus that reportedly first broke out from Wuhan, China are the United States (3,898,550), Brazil (2,099,896), and India (1,118,107).
