Police: Tinombala Squad Not Disbanded until Terrorists Arrested

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Police said they will not disband the Tinombala Squad until all members of the East Indonesia Mujahidin (MIT) terror group are captured. The Tinombala Task Force has come under public scrutiny after allegedly misfiring shots that resulted in the deaths of two people in Poso, South Sulawesi.
"As long as they are still on the hunt for the operation target, it is logical to extend the Tinombala Operation," Indonesian National Police PR chief, Brig. Gen. Awi Setyono, said on Monday, July 6.
On June 29, the Polri extended the Tinombala Task Force's duty until September 30. The extension was decided amid criticism of the squad's operations.
Awi asserted that the squad will put public safety above everything "to establish order and security as well as safety and law-abiding situation in Central Sulawesi," he said.
This year, the Tinombala Squad's performance had come under fire twice. On April 9, a man named Qidam Alfarizqi Mofance had allegedly been assaulted before he was shot. On June 6, the squad member fired wrong shots and killed Syarifuddin and Firman, two farmers from Poso's Kawende Village.
