TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police denied hacking accounts of a number of activists. The Police Chief of the Public Relations Division Insp. Gen. Argo Yuwono welcomed the public to voice their opinions freely.

“There is no hacking. We are transparent in this democracy. Anyone can express their opinions. What’s important is they are in accordance with the existing rules. There is no restriction, everything is free, but rules exist,” said Argo at his office, South Jakarta, on Wednesday, July 1.

Argo reminded the public that opinions should be passed based on the applicable regulations. He also joined in monitoring the expression of viewpoints in the public.

“Everything must follow the rules, we the police will oversee the sharing of opinions that follow the law,” he remarked.

Recently, several activists who are critical of the government had reportedly experienced digital attacks. Their Whatsapp and social media accounts were hacked and their personal data was stolen. The hackers also allegedly intercepted messages containing passwords sent by Whatsapp.

One of the digital attacks that recently became public limelight was the hacking of Whatsapp account owned by a democracy and transparency activist Ravio Patra which occurred on April 22, 2020.
