TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police's Criminal Investigation Unit (Bareskrim) announced today that it will be conducting an investigation on the alleged improper treatment suffered by Indonesian ship crews working aboard Chinese fishing vessels.

“The Bareskrim’s TPPO criminal task force will conduct an investigation on the case,” said Bareskrim’s general crime unit Director, Brig. Gen. Ferdy Sambo on Friday, May 8.

The police plan to question the Indonesian ship crews that worked on the alleged Chinese fishing vessels after they complete the 14-day quarantine. This effort is in conjunction with the Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry which previously coordinated with the South Korean coast guard.

“Abiding by the standard operating procedures, which will then be followed up by a virtual questioning,” said Ferdy.

The fishing vessels in question are the Long Xin 605 and Tian Yu 8 that docked at Busan not long ago. These are the vessels that are suspected of mistreating the Indonesian ship crews. Both of the vessels flying the Chinese flag carried 46 Indonesians, which had sailed back to China after leaving Busan.

The fishing vessels were briefly unable to leave as there were 35 undocumented Indonesian ship crews.
