TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) claims that the large-scale social restriction (PSBB) imposed in Jakarta had improved the city’s air quality. This is said to be attributed to the lack of people’s mobility.
“Even though the data still fluctuates dynamically, Jakarta’s air quality, in general, has improved lately,” said BMKG spokesman on air pollution, Suradi, on Thursday, April 30.
Based on a number of indicators and calculations, Suradi said that several studies by other parties also imply that the most significant factor in the improvement of air quality is due to the lack of motorized vehicles and the temporary operational stoppage of factories.
The slight increase in air pollution happened when the mobility of Jakartans increased during the COVID-19 panic-buying phase as the PSBB social restriction was enforced and also for the string of drought.
The BMKG said the operation of the steam power plant (PLTU) located in the western part of Jakarta, Banten, has not significantly affected the city’s air quality.
