TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Metro Police recorded an increase in minimarket robberies during the large-scale social restriction or PSBB period, which was aimed at reducing the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

“That’s right, there is a hike in stealing by force (curat) and motorcycle robberies (curanmor) as well as minimarket robberies because during this pandemic people are staying at home and minimarkets operate until 10 p.m. only,” said Jakarta Metro Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Yusri Yunus at the Jakarta Police HQ on Monday, April 20.

He explained the police noticed the increase after comparing the present data to those of the same month last year. In general, the city’s crime rate dwindled but minimarket and motorcycle robberies surged, he said.

However, he called on the public not to worry as the police had mapped crime-prone areas across the capital and its surrounding areas during the PSBB. Routine patrols were also carried out to prevent any kinds of crimes.

The police earlier caught and arrested two minimart thieves red-handed in East and Central Jakarta, and even shot dead one robber for attacking police officers using a machete.
