Traditional Markets Offer Online and Phone Orders amid Pandemic

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Six traditional markets located in West Java’s Depok City have adapted to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic by adopting trade services that negate the need for physical presence, which goes in line with the government’s social distancing policy.
“The traditional markets that have developed online trading as of March 30 are Cisalak, Agung, Kemiri, Tugu, Musi, and Depok Jaya,” said Depok Mayor Mohammad Idris in a written statement on Monday.
According to Idris, the main goal of the change is to help people in their daily grocery shopping and encouraging people to avert from physically visiting the markets.
Other traditional markets in the region that have adhered to a non-traditional way of shopping are the Sukatani Market and Tugu Market that enables buyers via phone orders. The mayor said that this only applies to people living in the nearby area.
The prices of staple goods in the aforementioned markets are claimed to remain normal and depend on the deal made between the sellers and buyers with the exception of additional delivery fees. According to Idris, the government will further assist people in purchasing staple goods.
