Police Order Retailers to Limit Staple Food Sales

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Police Headquarters' Food Task Force issued a circular restricting the sale of a number of staple food. This is done to guarantee market availability, in anticipation of panic buying due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
The circular is addressed to the Indonesian Retail Employers' Association. It mandates the limitation of selling rice to a maximum of 10 kilograms, 2 kilograms for sugar, a maximum of 4 liters of cooking oil, and a maximum of two boxes of instant noodles.
"The circular was issued to prevent parties seeking to profit from the situation," said Food Task Force chief Brig. Gen. Daniel Tahi Monang said on Tuesday, March 17.
Daniel said that so far there has been no indication of price-fixing. The price increase of a number of staples, he said, was caused by increasing demand.
"Anyone who rigs prices will be prosecuted," Daniel said.
Daniel asked the public not to make large purchases out of panic. He also assured the state still have enough food stock.
