TEMPO.CO, Kupang - A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 hit Waingapu City, East Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on Friday, 21 February, at 10:13 local time.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) head for Denpasar Region III, M. Taufik Gunawan, stated that BMKG's analysis results showed that the epicenter was located at 9.75 South Latitude and 120.63 East Longitude.

"Precisely, in the sea, 42 km southeast of Waingapu City, NTT, at a depth of 68 km."

The location of the epicenter and the hypocenter indicated that the quake was a medium type that occurred due to the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian plate under the Eurasian plate.

Based on the public reports, the shocks were felt in the Waingapu City at the level of III MMIs (Modified Mercalli Intensity). But the results of the modeling analysis show that the earthquake has no potential to cause a tsunami.

As of 10:38 local time, BMKG monitoring results had not shown any aftershocks. The meteorology agency called on the people to remain calm and not affected by baseless information regarding the disaster.
