TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister Mahendra Siregar announced that the government is planning to bring home additional Indonesians who currently reside in China. This evacuation, he said, is related to the novel coronavirus crisis in China’s province of Wuhan.

“What we plan to do is to bring home a number of our students [studying in China],” said Mahendra at the headquarters of the Maritime Affairs and Investments Ministry today.

He did not elaborate on the exact number of students the government is planning to evacuate from a number of Chinese provinces.

This follows Indonesia’s first evacuation plan that brought home 245 Indonesian citizens from China’s Hubei Province in early February. These Indonesians are currently under intense observation in an area at Natuna which will last roughly 14-days.

The number of casualties due to the novel coronavirus outbreak in mainland China has grown exponentially to a total of 811 people as of Sunday, February 9. The death toll due to coronavirus infection has officially surpassed the SARS outbreak back in 2002 - 2003 that unfortunately claimed the lives of 774 people across the globe.
