TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The latest survey by the Syarif Hidayatullah Islamic University’s Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM) suggests that most legislators in the House of Representatives (DPR) do not see any serious issue in the country’s religious education.

“About 46.7 percent out of the total of 372 respondents think there is a serious issue in Indonesia’s religious education. This means there are fewer legislators who think the education sector has no issues,” said PPIM researcher, Sirojuddin Arief today, Feb. 5, in Jakarta.

The study by PPIM entitled “Legislators’ view about the government’s role toward Indonesia’s religious education” involved 372 House of Representatives (DPR) who were asked since October 21 - December 17, 2019. The study adopted multiple and logistic regression analysis.

Out of 46.7 percent, 19.46 percent think the lack of state-knowledge in the country’s religious education as a serious issue. Meanwhile, only 12.16 percent agree that insight into diversity in religious education is a serious matter.

“In the context of the growing intolerance in school environments, this study comes as disappointing news for the DPR as an institution that should tend for diversity,” said Sirojuddin.
