TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 5-magnitude earthquake hit Jayapura, Papua, at around 19:42 local time, causing the residents in the city and surrounding areas to flee the buildings due to a strong shake.

Head of Data and Information of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Region V Jayapura Herlambang said on Tuesday night, February 4, 2020, that the quake occurred at 2.81 south latitudes and 140.84 east longitude, in the depth of 17 km, as quoted by Antara.

The epicenter was 30 km southeast of Jayapura and there was no tsunami potential.

The intensity of the quake, Herlambang said based on the data, was at 3 to 4 MMI.

Jayapura mall visitors running out and down from the top floor. "I had wanted to go down when the earthquake occurred but waited for the child who was going to the toilet. While waiting, I thought there was any aftershocks and there was none," said Rima, a resident of the Dok V Jayapura area.
