TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Garuda Indonesia has temporarily closed several flight routes to and from China as the coronavirus epidemic escalates and following the global emergency status issued by the World Health Organization or WHO.

"This policy is a follow-up of Garuda's commitment and full support for the government's efforts to prevent the spread of the virus in Indonesia," the national flag carrier’s managing director Irfan Setiaputra said in a press release, Sunday, February 2.

Irfan underlined that his side prioritizes the safety of both passengers and crew, adding that the temporary closure will take effect on Wednesday, February 5 until further notice.

The closed routes include flights from and to five cities of China, viz. Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Zhengzhou, and Xi'an. At present, Garuda serves as many as 30 flights every week to China.

However, he added, flights to and from Hong Kong are still available under strict supervision carried out by related authorities.

"Garuda continues to monitor the current situation and will take necessary actions, including providing the latest information, especially related to flight operations," said Irfan.

Due to the temporary closure, Irfan said his side offered flight reschedule and reroute, as well as refund services. Would-be passengers are advised to regularly check the airline’s flight schedules especially routes of coronavirus-affected regions via its official social media, website, or for more information, they may contact Garuda Indonesia 24-hour Call Center at 021-2351-9999 and 0804-1807-807.
