Minister: Amazon Investment will Boost Domestic Digital Industry

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita revealed that Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) will invest in Indonesia. Agung has great faith in the investment plan, saying it would strengthen the domestic digital industry.
"We welcome Amazon Web Services' investment plans in Indonesia. We hope this will spur the development of the manufacturing sector, startups, as well as small and medium industries in the country to transform towards industry 4.0," Agus said through a written statement, Thursday, January 23.
Agus said he first heard of the plan from AWS' vice president for global public policy, Michael Punke. The two met at the 2020 World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.
AWS is a sub-division of Amazon that provides cloud computing services. The company plans to set up an infrastructure area, known as the AWS region, in Jakarta by late 2021 or early 2022.
"This investment is very important because it will support Indonesia's position as a strategic digital hub for AWS customers," Agus said.
