Passenger Dies while Airborne; Lion Air Makes Emergency Landing

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Lion Air's flight number JT-085 bound for Surabaya from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, made an emergency landing on Sunday, January 12. The aircraft landed at Bandaranaike International Airport in Sri Lanka after one of its passengers died.

A female passenger who was an Umrah pilgrim, SA, died on the plane.

"The doctor and the rest of the cabin crew had given her first aid. The doctor said the passenger died when the plane was about to land," Lion Air's corporate communications strategic officer Mandala Prihantoro said in a statement in Jakarta Wednesday, January 15.

The Airbus 330-300 CEO was carrying 13 crew and 257 passengers who are pilgrims of umrah.

One hour after takeoff from Jeddah, the pilot informed air traffic officers that he would divert to Bandaranaike Airport in Katunayake, 35 km north of Colombo, Sri Lanka, for medical reasons.

SA needed immediate medical assistance. On the plane, SA had received medical help, but she passed away.

The plane landed at 1:45 a.m. Monday morning Sri Lanka time. The plane then took off at 09:45 time and arrived at Surabaya's Juanda Airport at 16:30.
