TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The head of the General Elections Commission (KPU) Hasyim Asy'ari said his side has coordinated with the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy concerning voting for the Umrah pilgrimage during the election.
"We send notices to both ministries based on each scope of works," Hasyi said during a press conference in Central Jakarta on Monday, January 5.
He explained that the Ministry of Religious Affairs coordinates travel agencies for Umrah, while the Tourism Ministry coordinates travel agencies for tourism.
Hopefully, the current Umrah pilgrimage could land back in Indonesia at least on February 13 so they could vote in their hometown, while those planning to do Umrah are urged to embark after February 14. This step is taken since KPU printed ballot papers based on the final voter list or DPT.
"If someone wants to change their polling station for Umrah they have to apply for it D-7 ahead of the Umrah," he said. "As long as the ballot papers are still available."
KPU said they are unable to prepare additional ballot papers for these categories of voters. Ballot papers are printed the same amount as DPT with an additional two percent in each polling station.
"Thus, KPU decided to establish polling stations in special locations," he said, giving examples of Islamic boarding schools, civil service academies, prisons, mining stations, and other special locations.
Hasyim urged citizens who plan to travel abroad that KPU cannot serve them if they do not apply for overseas voting. "But we must also ensure the availability of the ballot papers," he said.
