TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Forensic Laboratory says the building that was collapsed in Palmerah, Slipi, West Jakarta was caused by the corrosion process.

Based on the initial investigation, the head of the Police's Ballistics and Metallurgy Forensics (Balmetfor) Comsr. Ulung Kanjaya says the four-story building was collapsed due to the corrosion.

"From the results of observation and preliminary analysis, we can conclude that it was due to corrosion rather than water penetration into the concrete," he said in Jakarta, Tuesday, January 7, 2020.

Ulung estimates the corrosion process in the collapsed building has been going on for a long time until it collapsed on Monday as it couldn't withstand the load of the building.

"We have evidence that it was caused by a natural process of corrosion," he asserted.

The police suspect there were leaks in the building, so that water can get into the structural concrete since the steels that were used were plain steel with low carbon.

High rainfall hit the building also increasingly making the building obsolete and can't accommodate the load so that the water gets trapped and overload the building structure.
