TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A special staffer to Vice President Ma'ruf Amin, K.H. Robikin Emhas, asserted that the rumors circulating among the public about mosque police were false information.

“An issue saying that mosques will be guarded and monitored by the police is a hoax. Kiai Ma’ruf never said it,” said Emhas during his speech in a national seminar of Nahdlatul Ulama in Meulaboh, Sunday, December 22.

Emhas explained the VP had never made such a statement. Besides, stationing a police officer in each mosque throughout the country would be costly. “Where will the finances come from?” he asked.

What the VP meant during his speech in Cirebon, West Java, Emhas underlined, was that many Islamic houses of worship were misused as places to spread hate speech that might spark public unrest.

Therefore, Ma'ruf Amin called on mosque managements or takmir to take security measures so as to prevent people from spreading hostility among the public in the holy places.

“A mosque has many functions, as a place of worship, community economy, and positive public activities,” Emhas said, adding that the government was striving to restore the real function of mosques as in the era of Prophet Muhammad.
