TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investments, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, asserts that Indonesia will fend-off European Union’s lawsuit against Indonesia’s nickel ore export ban.
Luhut maintains that the policy has been enacted as Indonesia plans to domestically produce nickel ore and its derivative products such as lithium batteries. He maintains that it would add revenue, but also open more jobs for locals.
“Nickel ore exports have been the largest with 98 percent to China, meanwhile the EU only constitutes two percent,” he said on Tuesday, December 17. “No country could dictate Indonesia’s policies.”
Luhut once compared the gestures shown by the European Union (EU) and China and in comparing between the two, unlike the EU’s lawsuit, he said China opted to invest in Indonesia despite the large percentage of nickel ores were exported to China prior to the export ban.
“Now the European Union will go to the WTO. I’ll tell them that they only have 2 percent of our exports by they want to sue us,” Minister Luhut said.
