TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Tangerang City Police precinct made an arrest on two people and confiscated 1,687 iPhones that were illegally imported from Singapore in links to a syndicate that sells illegal refurbished smartphones.

“This is a syndicate that has refurbished smartphones at the Ruko Boulevard business area in Panongan, Tangerang District,” said Tangerang Police Chief Adj. Grand Commissioner Ade Ary Syam on Sunday, November 17.

The two suspects are identified as R (25) and WS (28) while one other accomplice identified as M is still on the run.

The syndicate’s modus operandi, explained Ade, is by purchasing a wide range of damaged iPhones from Singapore without and importing the goods illegally to Indonesia. The broken units are then refurbished with knock-off components that are much cheaper.

These refurbished iPhone units, complete with knock-off IMEI codes, are then sold online under an online store name entitled Panda House dan Lin Store. The suspects claim to be able to generate Rp150 million each month.

Police say the suspects now face up to five years in prison for violating consumers’ protection law Article 62 (1) and Trade Law No.104 and 106.
