175 Individuals, 4 Firms Named Suspects of Forest Fire

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The police have named 175 individuals and four corporations as suspects of land and forest fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan islands.

“Yes, until September 2019, there are 175 individuals and four firms as wildfire suspects,” said National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo in his office, South Jakarta, Tuesday, September 10.

Dedi announced hundreds of suspects hailed from across six regions, viz. West Kalimantan, Riau, Jambi, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, and South Sumatra.

Meanwhile, he admitted that the number of hotspots has increased this week, especially in Riau and South Sumatra.

“There are 257 hotspots in Riau from previously 104, while in Sumatra from 40 to 143 hotspots,” Dedi outlined.

The suspects will be charged under Law No. 32/2009 on environmental protection and management, Law No. 39/2014 on plantation, Law No. 5/1990 on natural resources and ecosystem conservation, and Law No. 18/2013 on prevention and eradication of forest degradation.
