TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) succeeded to translocate a 90-kilogram orangutan at the East Kotawaringin District in an evacuation process that lasted for two hours.

“The translocation had to be done to move the orangutan to a better location,” said BKSDA Sampit security post commander Muriansyah on Wednesday, September 4.

The actual time-frame of the rescue operation was originally held on August 30, but the information had just been shared by the Central Kalimantan BKSDA social media account and immediately received massive public support.

The injured orangutan was first observed at the location after a local resident identified as Tri witnessed the large mammal roaming around his palm oil plantation for the past two months. He then reported the sighting to the Central Kalimantan’s BKSD WRU SKW II team and the Orangutan Foundation UK.

Both agencies arrived at the location on the same day late at night and spent more than two hours trying to capture the 25-year-old ape. The team utilized a tranquilizer and eventually managed to catch the primate.

The rare and protected animal is currently reported to have been transferred to the Suaka Margasatwa Lamandau (national park).
