TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - One personnel of Indonesian Military (TNI) has died during a mass rally in Deiyai, Papua Province today, August 28. Some 150 people hit the street in front of the Regent’s office.

The mass demanded the regent attend the referendum reading, yet the request was ignored.

“Then a riot broke out. One TNI personnel died and five police officers sustain injuries of archery,” said National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo in Mercure Hotel, Ancol, North Jakarta, Wednesday, August 28.

Dedi suspected the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) to have infiltrated the demonstration. As of now, TNI and Police officers are still striving to tame the rally.

“We also call in public figures to calm the situation to refrain people from being provoked any further,” Dedi said.

Based on the information so far, six civilians have also fell victims in the riot. However, Dedi could not yet detail the issue. “Information regarding the six people cannot be confirmed yet. Papua Police are still investigating it,” he added.
