Abdul Somad Faces Charges on Blasphemy; Ahok: Just Pray

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok suggested Muslim preacher Abdul Somad pray a lot in dealing with charges of alleged blasphemy. As a Christian, he claimed that he did not have any issue regarding Somad’s remarks.
Ahok also said he did not follow the case incriminating the well-known preacher following the latter’s statements on Christian cross and statues in video footage circulated on social media platforms.
“I don’t know, I think it’s just it,” said Ahok indifferently at Jakarta Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) building, Monday, August 25.
Ahok said he was also unconcerned as to whether Somad was willing to apologize for his words. “That’s not a problem, it’s okay,” he said.
Ahok, who was charged with blasphemy, advised Somad to pray hard to know more about God. “Just pray,” he underlined.
As previous reports suggested, Abdul Somad was reported to the police for alleged blasphemy by the Horas Bangso Batak Community, the Indonesian Christian Students Movement (GMKI), and a man named Sudiarto.
Despite his video's sparking controversy among the public, Abdul Somad asserted that he would not issue an apology, and that his remarks were Islamic teachings.
