Agrarian and Spatial Planning Minister/National Land Agency Head, Sofyan Djalil.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Agrarian and Spatial Planning Minister Sofyan Djalil has confirmed that the nation’s capital city would immediately be relocated to East Kalimantan province.

“[To] East Kalimantan, but the exact location has yet to be determined,” he said at the Coordinating Economic Ministry building in Jakarta, Thursday, August 22, 2019.

Sofyan said the land procurement for the new capital was still awaiting the official announcement by President Jokowi as to its exact location. He explained the first phase of construction of the new capital would require land plots measuring 3,000 hectares for governmental offices.

“Then they will be expanded to 200-300,000 hectares to build a city, beautiful city parks, many parks, so people will live healthily with clean air. We expect that this city will be an interesting city to reside in,” he said.

Earlier, President Joko Widodo or Jokowi asked for permission from all of Indonesian citizens to relocate the capital city from Jakarta to an area on Kalimantan island. The president delivered the statement during his speech of the 74th National Independence Day at the joint meeting of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) and the House of Representatives (DPR) in Jakarta on Friday, August 16, 2019.
