Police Keep Eye on 5 Twitter Accounts Spreading Hoaxes on Papua

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police have discovered five Twitter accounts that allegedly disseminated hoaxes that ignited the riots in Papua and West Papua.
“For Twitter there are at least five additional accounts, and several more from Instagram and YouTube. The police’s Criminal Investigation Department’s (Bareskrim) Cyber Crime Directorate is still profiling them,” said National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo.
Dedi said most of the accounts were anonymous, thus making it somewhat difficult for the police to track them down. Dedi, however, was upbeat the police would soon obtain their identities and arrest them.
He added the police were encountering difficulties in monitoring WhatsApp groups for hoaxes. “[Monitoring] WhatsApp groups requires special treatments, it is different from social media. On social media, we can directly profile the account owners,” he said.
Earlier reports said an array of hoaxes were rife regarding the the arrest of a number of Papuan college students in Surabaya. Some of the hoaxes said a Papuan student was killed an others were arrested by force.
