Riot in Fakfak; Police Claim to Have Situation under Control

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Police along with Indonesian Military (TNI) claimed to have persuasively controlled the public unrest in Fakfak, West Papua. The riot broke out this morning, Wednesday, August 21, at around 09:00 Indonesian Eastern Time (WIT).
The mob put fire in Tumburuni Market and blocked several roads in the region.
“There is a mass movement, they allegedly burn the market and several vital objects,” said National Police spokesperson Insp. Gen. Mohammad Iqbal in his office, South Jakarta, Wednesday, August 21.
According to him, the police have communicated with religious and local figures to persuade the public to refrain from doing anarchist actions.
Tempo has tried to reach the Resort Police headquarters, but there is no response yet.
As reported by news agency Antara, West Papua Regional Police have mobilized security teams to handle the riot in the region. “We have dispatched Mobile Brigade (Brimob) personnel,” said West Papua spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. Mathias Krey.
