TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The status of Mount Slamet in Central Java has been raised to alert level II (caution or Waspada) on Friday, August 9, at 09:00 a.m., as announced by the Volcanology Center and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG).

“Based on monitoring data, there is a quite significant increase of the mountain activity, and it needs anticipative measure if an eruption occurs, so the status is raised from level I (normal) to level II (caution),” as quoted from the agency's website.

The active stratovolcano that spreads in five regencies, viz. Pemalang, Banyumas, Brebes, Tegal, and Purbalingga, shows a sign of rising volcanic activity as it emits white smog with a thin to a thick intensity at a height of 300 meters from the crater.

Following the alert status issuance, PVMBG appealed to the public to stay away from the summit within a radius of 2 kilometers.
