TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Ministry is still tightly monitoring H. Asan Sampit Airport in Kotawaringin Timur, Central Kalimantan following land fires in Sampit and its vicinity areas.

According to Air Transportation Director-General Polana B Pramesti, the airport remains to operate normally. The ministry further coordinates with the airport operational unit and stakeholders.

“We continuously monitor the development case of fire in Sampit and run coordination with related stakeholders, so all teams can be readily deployed to soon inform proper strategies to anticipate things that likely disturb flight operation,” said Polana in a press release, Tuesday, August 6.

Sampit Airport operational unit head, Havandi Gusli, said there was a flight delay as the flight visibility was only 100 meters due to the smog. However, he asserted, the airport condition is still normal.

“There is a delay, but after 8 a.m. the operation returns to normal with a visibility rate over 2,000 meters. No airliner cancels a flight until now,” Havandi added.

According to him, land fires occurred every year in Sampit areas. To anticipate the impact, his side holds intensive coordination with AirNav Indonesia, BMKG, BPBD, and related parties. BPBD had also deployed two helicopters to clear the smoke.
