TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police have nabbed a suspected provocateur of the May 22 riot identified as YG in Ciamis, West Java. YG had been listed on the police’s wanted list.

“YG is apprehended in Ciamis, he was a provocateur,” said National Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Asep Adi Saputra in his office, Friday, July 19.

The police suspected YG of being a riot commander among demonstrators by uttering provocative words. “He narrated ‘fire, throw, fight,” said Police spokesperson Brig. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo, July 5.

The police have named 456 people as suspects in the rioting—207 of them received suspended detention. They hailed from eight cities outside of Jakarta,

The May 22 riot lasted for three days on May 21-23. It broke out after unknown groups infiltrated the peaceful rally in light of the 2019 presidential election results. The police stated the two groups were different.

The riot occurred in several areas of Central Jakarta, viz. the office of Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu), police dormitory in Petamburan, and Slipi.
