TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy for Infrastructure Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs, Ridwan Djamaluddin, said that two Chinese producers of electric vehicles (EV), BYD and JAC, are mulling to relocate factories to Indonesia. The plan was made as an impact of the current trade war between the United States and China.

“There are producers of electric cars willing to relocate,” said Ridwan in the ministry office, Wednesday, July 10. The talks on relocation, he added, had been established several times. BYD even had cooperated with Indonesian entrepreneurs in a project.

However, the companies were reluctant to detail the exact figure to develop a factory in the archipelago.

The government, Ridwan said, is currently canvassing the location. As an alternative, he tapped West Java as the automotive center. Meanwhile, the investors were still considering the requirements and waiting for the regulation on electric vehicles.

The policy reportedly to be issued on May 2019. However, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Pandjaitan said it is still in process as it requires adjustments.
