TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - House of Representatives' (DPR) Commission III member Nasir Djamil suggested President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to quickly evaluate the Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) Law, which he deems as an elastic law.

“The President must evaluate laws that are elastic such as the ITE Law,” said Nasir at the Senayan parliamentary complex on Wednesday, July 10.

Nasir’s evaluation comes after the law seemingly wrongfully chastised Baiq Nuril, a teacher who is condemned to months in prison for revealing an audio conversation recording of her former principal sexually harassing her.

The House’s Commission III hopes that the law could be evaluated so that it could not just protect the privacy of an Indonesian citizen, but also provide justice for those who are suspected of violating those privacies.

Nasir acknowledges that the law was formed under good intentions to protect privacy, however, he thinks that the legal procedure in the field seems to be minimum in the monitoring. He said restorative justice would be the better option to handle Baiq Nuril’s case.
