TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tectonic earthquake with magnitude 6.0 rocked Mamberamo Raya Regency, Papua Province, Monday, June 24, at 08:52:26 Western Indonesian Time (WIB).

The updated measurement of the quake was recorded at magnitude 6.1, as stated by Rahmat Triyono, the head of an earthquake and tsunami station of Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

The quake epicenter was at 2.67 degrees south latitude and 138.76 degrees east longitude or precisely at lands, 85 kilometers southeast Burmeso City, Mamberamo Raya, Papua, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

It was classified as a shallow quake based on its epicenter and hypocenter location. The quake was caused by the activity of local cesarean, Yapen cesarean.

The analysis result of the quake mechanism concluded that it was triggered by an oblique-thrust fault.

The tremor was reportedly felt at III-IV MMI level in Sarmi, II-III MMI level in Jayapura, and II MMI level in Wamena. There has been no report on the impact of the earthquake yet. However, it has no potential to trigger a tsunami.

As of 08:50 WIB, BMKG recorded three aftershocks; magnitude 4.7, magnitude 5.1, and magnitude 4.4. The public is appealed to remain calm and not be affected by baseless information.
