TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Tourists spending holiday near the southern coast of Yogyakarta are urged to remain alert as Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of the region forecasted high tidal waves up to 5 meters few days ahead.

The agency’s Climatology Station head Reni Kraningtyas explained high waves would occur in the southern coast of the region on June 10-16 at a height of around 2.5-5 meters.

“There is a significant difference in air pressure in the northern and southern area causing an increase in wind speed which leads to high waves in Yogyakarta south coast,” said Reni in a statement, Monday, June 10.

BMKG data recorded high waves on Monday reached 2.5 to 3 meters and the figure would increase to around 3.5-5 meters on Tuesday until Thursday. While on Friday, the height was predicted to around 3.5-4 meters, and that would decline to 2.5-3.5 meters on Saturday and Sunday.

Thus, Reni appealed to tourists not to wash up on the shore and fishermen were suggested to postpone sailing.

The SAR commander of Parangtritis Beach, Yogyakarta, Ali Sutanto, said high tidal waves in the southern coast were relatively normal and fishermen activities in Depok Beach and Parangkusumo Beach run usually as well.
