TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-run toll operator Jasa Marga admitted severe congestion occurred during Eid homecoming return flow in Cikampek toll road, causing homecomers stuck for hours on the highway. As the corporate observed, the traffic volume toward Jakarta via Cikampek Utama and Kalihurip Utama increased significantly.
Hence, the one-way traffic policy was applied from KM 70 until KM 29 of Jakarta-Cikampek toll road starting on Sunday, June 9, at 22:30 Jakarta time, said Jasa Marga spokesperson Irra Susiyanti.
Irra explained that traffic density occurred since homecomers only had a short time to return to the capital after celebrating Eid al-Fitr in their hometown.
“All homecomers crowd the road to return to Jakarta within three days, and today (Sunday, June 9) is their last day before resuming their normal activity on Monday,” said Irra in a written statement, on early hours of Monday, June 10.

A day before, the traffic engineering was applied to ease congestion in Kalikangkung toll gate KM 414 until Jakarta-Cikampek toll KM 29. However, it did not last for 24 hours, but at certain times.
Around 18 million homecomers was predicted to return to Jakarta, Banten, and Bandung Raya. Some 14.9 million of them would enter the capital city and its vicinity region. The figure excluded the potential number of newcomers.
Transportation Ministry’s Land Transport Director-General Budi Setiyadi earlier estimated the homecoming return trip would peak on June 8-9, 2019, and the road would see more traffic density as homecomers only got a shorter time compared to that of homecoming trip that lasted for 6 days from May 29 to June 4.
