TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia governor Perry Warjiyo said that in the last two days there has been Rp1.7 trillion capital inflow to state securities (SBN). Foreign buys of SBN did not stop despite the mass protests that turned into clashes between the police and rioters.

"This is due to expectations that Indonesia's economy would improve, as well as the attractive yield offered by the SBN," Perry said here on Thursday, May 23.

Since the beginning of the year, SBNs have absorbed RP57 trillion of foreign funds.

"The continuing inflow shows foreign investors' confidence of our market," Perry remarked and added that the banking sector is also relatively unscathed by what happened.

The May 21 protest started peacefully until the Tarawih prayer, which was around 20:00 Tuesday. But then chaos ensued after some people started to attack the police.

The rally-turned-riot broke again on the evening of May 22 at M.H. Thamrin Road, in front of the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) building in Central Jakarta. The clash between security officers and rioters ensued until early in the morning of Thursday, the 23rd.
