TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State electricity company PLN announced it has no plans to increase the number of public electric charging stations (SPLU) in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi, along with other regions.

This issue arose following the recent launch of Blue Bird Group’s electric vehicle (EV) taxi fleet on Monday, which saw Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Ignasius Jonan challenge PLN to provide more charging stations.

“As of adding the number of SPLUs, we add it accordingly to the condition. But what currently exists is sufficient to serve the public’s need,” said Dwi Suryo, PLN VP public relations to Tempo on Tuesday, April 22.

Dwi Suryo explains that adding charging stations need to consider several substantial elements such as the public’s need and moving the current inefficient SPLUs to other locations. However, he said that the main argument today is the limited population of electric vehicles that are still in the dozens.

“We will add charging stations if [the population of EVs] increase to the millions,” said Dwi.

Currently, PLN’s SPLU is spread across 1,600 locations in a number of provinces with its main customers being restaurant management.
