TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - City-owned water operator PT PAM Jaya said only 60 percent of Jakartans had access to clean water.

“To date, a total of 40 percent of Jakarta residents have no access to clean water,” said PT PAM Jaya's corporate president director Priyatno Hernowo during an event to commemorate the World Water Day in Jakarta on Thursday, March 22.

However, Bambang stopped short of detailing areas that were still lacking clean water access, mentioning only the city’s north and west zones.

The government, Bambang noted, was keeping a close watch on clean water issues and currently striving to open up access to all communities. The city administration targeted 100 percent of people in the capital could access clean water by 2030.

At present, water supplies in Jakarta amounted to 20,200 liters per second—most of them flowing from rivers outside of the capital, viz. rivers of Jatiluhur and Tangerang.

Bambang further mentioned that PAM Jaya determined to curb the rate of water losses. “The figure is still at 43 percent. This must be cut down,” he added.

Besides increasing the network and supplies of clean water through pipes, Bambang continued, his corporate tried to educate the public to refrain from using groundwater.
