Indonesia's BNPT and Egypt Government signed an MoU on battling against terrorism in Cairo, Egypt, Feb. 26, 2019. Indonesian Embassy for Egypt.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) Chief Suardi Alius and the Egyptian Minister of Interior Mahmoud Tawfik signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) upon battling the terrorism on Tuesday, February 26, in Cairo.

In a press release from the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Egypt, the MoU was also attended by the Indonesian Ambassador for Egypt Helmy Fauzi and BNPT General Secretary Marshal Asep Adang Supriyadi.

Suhardi explained that the radical terrorist network in Indonesia is heavily influenced by the dynamics and development of the global terrorist network, especially in the Middle East.

It is unsurprising that Indonesia’s radical terrorist group joined forces with ISIS, he said, considering that the terrorist group has a significant influence in three Southeast Asian regions; Indonesia, Philippines, and Malaysia.

Suhardi said that the time has come for Indonesia and Egypt to work as a unity in fighting terrorism.

Moreover, Ambassador Helmy Fauzi explains that the MoU was initiated since 2013. He is positive that either Indonesia or Egypt can learn from each other’s experience to improve counterterrorism efforts considering that terrorism is a transnational crime.
