Gov't Urged to be Firm in Imposing GPS Ban While Driving

TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The head of Center for Transportation and Logistics (Pustral) of the University of Gadjah Mada Yogyakarta, Nur Yuwono, said that the public should abide by the ruling of the Constitutional Court (MK) asserting the ban on using Global Positioning System or GPS installed on smartphones while driving, as a legal policy.
Despite the bill caused a polemic, particularly among online taxi drivers and others, the regulation is a binding precedent that cannot be interfered. “The decision has issued by MK, so whether the public likes it or not, the regulation on the use of GPS should be imposed,” said Nur today, February 7.
However, Nur continued, the regulation should clearly point out the boundaries of the GPS usage while driving as its initial goal which aims for the sake of driver safety.
“What examples of the GPS use that are prohibited, a ban to use GPS while on board or GPS installed on a car because now many cars have been featured with the GPS system,” he added.
Nur further appealed to those who against the ban on using GPS while driving to urge the government to shed light the public regarding each point of the regulation.
