TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Riau’s Association of the Indonesia Tour and Travel Agencies (Asita) Chairman Dede Firmansyah said that the national Chinese New Year holiday, or locally known as Imlek, sees many Pekanbaru residents opting to fly overseas vacation to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore rather than domestic flights.
This follows the fact that a flight ticket from Pekanbaru-Jakarta is priced as a hefty Rp1,000,000 compared to Pekanbaru-Kuala Lumpur (Rp365,000) and Pekanbaru-Singapore flight (Rp478,000).
This condition, said Dede, is a blow toward domestic tourism industry in the midst of the national Chinese New Year holiday, or Imlek.
“Malaysia and Singapore attract Indonesian tourists during Imlek holiday. What more are carriers defending with expensive domestic flights? They are equally hurt with lesser passengers,” said Dede on Sunday.
Dede said that he often talks about this issue directly to air carrier management in Pekanbaru through numerous meeting. However, he has yet seen the result of his complaints which result with the Pekanbaru – Jakarta flight to be much more pricey.
