TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Crying is a known and effective way to get rid of anxiety since suppressing your emotions too often could lead to negative psychological effects in the long run.

The following are three reasons according to Lifehack.org that are proven to be beneficial.

1. Crying Helps Release Stress

Around thirty years ago, a biochemist found out that emotional tears could be therapeutic and contain more protein compared to non-emotional tears. This indicates important psychological and physiological changes that occur within the body when we shed tears.

Emotional crying involves muscular spasms, rapid intake of breath, and tears, which all crescendo and then gradually subside. Throughout this process, the body tenses and then relaxes, providing a feeling of release.

2. Building Mental Toughness through Crying

Crying can be a way of directly acknowledging and facing your emotions. Avoiding or ignoring negative feelings can be detrimental to your mental health and could lead to anxiety and depressive disorders.

Embracing your emotions and facing them head on allows yourself the opportunity to weep for the sake of your own mental health. It is actually important and requires courage.

3. Healing and Coping Through Crying

According to Professor Roger Baker from Bournemouth University, crying that is caused by emotional reasons transform distress into something tangible, which reduces feelings of trauma and acts as an emotional healing process.

Tears jump-start your recovery by symbolizing psychological wounds into a physical form.
