5 Ways Mental Health Affects Your Physical Well-being

24 July 2023 12:29 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mental health does not only affect you psychologically but also your physical well-being. Quoted from WebMD, a healthy mind will prevent physical issues, such as cardiac arrest and stroke. Meanwhile, a poor psychological condition will lead to worse social relations with others around you.

According to Psychology Today, the mental condition is also related to social situations, one of which is discrimination. Treating mental disorders does not stop at recovery, but also meeting the socio-economic needs of the person.

Below, the ways mental health affects your physical and social well-being are provided in detail:

1. Depression

Depression affects various types of physical diseases, such as diabetes, heart and blood vessel diseases, and arthritis. Mental disorders complicate the treatment of chronic illness since it's harder for people with depression to do recovery work.

2. Sleep disorders

People who struggle with mental problems also experience sleep disorders such as sleep apnea and insomnia. People with irregular sleep patterns are more at risk for their physical health. For example, people with mental problems are more prone to smoking and consuming alcohol.

3. Hard to focus

Quoting Psychology Today, physical condition is generally influenced by the mind, and a series of complex factors such as residence, genetics, childhood experiences, and material ownership. Access to material resources is one of the most significant factors in mental stability since worrying about resources will make it harder to focus on anything else.

4. Feeling tired excessively

Mental health problems could be caused by working your brain at an intense pace without any rest. Quoting from Medical News Today, physical and mental fatigue is connected. People usually feel mental strain when they are focused on taxing work.

Mental strain could be experienced by young adults with low-income, chronic patients, and people with depression. Quoting Healthline, the mental strain caused by job pressure is the most common.

5. Difficulty processing emotions

Prolonged mental strain will affect your ability to think, solve problems, and make it difficult to process and regulate your emotions.
