TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Reports from Jakarta`s National Narcotics Agency (BNNP DKI) revealed that Indonesia’s capital houses 113 areas exposed to drug trafficking. Head of BNNP DKI Jakarta Brig. Gen. Johnypol Latupeirissa said that the areas in question consist mainly of urban slums and nightclubs.

“It’s all spread evenly. This means that the areas have spread across Jakarta,” said Johnypol at the BNNP DKI Jakarta office in Kuningan, South Jakarta, on Thursday, December 20.

He said that the drug spread across slum areas has become a phenomenon after unemployed residents are most often exploited as drug couriers by larger syndicates. They are mostly paid by the syndicates with the drugs itself.

The agency concluded that most drug abusers in Jakarta are men; “17 percent of drug users are female, the rest are male,” he said.

The BNNP DKI Jakarta data suggest that the majority of drug users are employed, and constitutes to 54 percent of the city’s illegal drug users. Meanwhile, 27 percent of drug abusers are students while the rest comprises of unemployed people.
