A fatal train crash in Indonesia involving the Argo Bromo Anggrek train on the Gambir-Surabaya Pasar Turi route and the electric commuter line (KRL) train heading to Cikarang at East Bekasi Station occurred on Monday night, April 27, 2026. Over a dozen of people died as a result of the train accident.

The train collision in Bekasi began when the KRL was stopping at track 1 of East Bekasi Station due to a disturbance ahead, namely a collision between another train and a taxi.

Shortly after, the Argo Bromo Anggrek train approached from behind and struck the stationary KRL at the station, plowing through the women-only carriage of the Commuter Line train and causing severe damage.

Here are the facts about the train crash incident up until Wednesday, April 29, 2026:

Death Toll Reaches 15

Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) stated that the death toll in the train accident at East Bekasi Station has risen to 15. "Update until 1 pm earlier today, there are 15 people who have died and 88 people still under medical care," said AHY during his visit to the location on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.

AHY explained that the joint team had evacuated all the victims who were previously trapped inside the carriages, including three victims who were initially trapped and are currently receiving medical treatment at the hospital. "It can be said that everyone has been successfully evacuated, taken out of the carriages that were hit last night," he said.

According to AHY, the focus of the current handling is not only on the evacuation process, but also on the recovery of the victims' condition and the normalization of the affected railway line. He stated that the process of removing the damaged train sets is still ongoing, including the commuter line carriage directly affected in the accident.

Basarnas Halts Victim Search

The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) halted the victim search process for the accident involving the Argo Bromo Anggrek train and KRL at East Bekasi Station on Tuesday, April 28, 2026. Head of Basarnas Air Marshal TNI Mohammad Syafii stated that the victim search operation was closed at 08.00 AM after the entire evacuation process was completed. "At 08.00, everything was finished, all our SAR teams returned to their respective bases," said Syafii at East Bekasi Station on Tuesday.

According to Syafii, the SAR team completed the search and evacuation process in less than 12 hours since the incident occurred. During the process, the SAR team provided special treatment for several victims who were trapped inside the train carriages. "There were five victims in a trapped condition and had to be extricated," said Syafii.

All Victims are Adult Females

Vice President Corporate Communications of KAI Anne Purba stated that all the victims who died were women. According to her, the victims were productive age women who were still studying or working.

In addition to the deceased victims, Anne mentioned that 84 other passengers had been taken to several hospitals to receive medical treatment. Anne stated that KAI is still identifying the deceased victims.

Government Seeks Clarification from Taxi Company

The Directorate General of Land Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation summoned the management of Xanh SM or Green SM taxi on Tuesday, April 28, 2026. The summoning was done to seek clarification following the KRL Cikarang-Argo Bromo Anggrek train accident at East Bekasi Station the day before.

"We have formed a special team to delve into the involvement of Xanh SM taxi, including its licensing, administrative completeness, compliance with safety standards, and compliance with public transportation operational provisions," said Director General of Land Transportation Aan Suhanan in a statement on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.

He explained that public safety is the top priority, so any potential violations will be dealt with according to regulations. Based on data in the Siprajab application, the taxi involved in the accident with the license plate number B 2864 SBX is registered and has a valid supervision card until October 28, 2026.

The vehicle is also registered to serve regular taxis in the Jabodetabek area. Nevertheless, the Directorate General of Land Transportation continues to conduct further investigation to ensure the operator's compliance with all applicable provisions.

Police Question Green SM Taxi Driver

The police are questioning the online electric Green SM taxi driver following the accident that occurred between the Argo Bromo Anggrek train and the KRL at East Bekasi Station. Currently, the taxi driver has been secured and is being questioned at the Bekasi Kota Metropolitan Police.

"The driver has been secured at the Bekasi Kota Metropolitan Police for further investigation by the Head of Traffic Collection, Analysis, and Study Section of the Police Traffic Corps Kompol Sandhi Wiedyanoe in a written statement on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.

Sandhi explained that the series of accidents began due to an electric short circuit in the electronic online taxi at the level crossing without a barrier gate. The short-circuited electric car was then struck by the KRL from Cikarang towards Jakarta, causing a series of subsequent accidents.

DPR Chair Questions PT KAI

The Chair of the House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, urged the Indonesian government to evaluate the railway line safety system after the train crash incident. According to Puan, poor safety at railway crossings often leads to accidents.

"We ask the government, PT KAI, along with relevant stakeholders to prioritize safety issues on the railway line. The railway system and safety should be improved," said Puan in a written statement on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.

In addition, Puan urged for the investigation that will uncover the cause of the accident to produce clear structural learning. Thus, in the end, the evaluation can provide assurance to the public that the KRL is a safe, rational transportation choice supported by a strong safety system.

Prabowo Demands Full Investigation

President Prabowo Subianto demanded a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the accident between the Argo Bromo Anggrek train and the Commuter Line or KRL at East Bekasi Station. According to him, this investigation is important to ensure the exact cause of the collision incident and to serve as an evaluation for the future.

"We will immediately investigate what happened," said Prabowo at the Bekasi City General Hospital on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.

In addition to immediately investigating the accident, the central government is prioritizing the victims. As of now, there are still dozens of victims receiving treatment in hospitals. He also emphasized that the government will provide compensation to all victims affected by the incident.
