Transport Ministry Assures Not to Ground Lion Air

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said the ministry would not revoke the flight route permit of budget airline Lion Air following the crash on last Monday, Oct 29 in the waters of Tanjung Karawang, West Java.

“We will not concern to the route permit, but to the personal and management,” said Budi Karya after dialogues with the victims’ relatives in Hotel Ibis in Cawang, Monday, November 5.

Transportation Ministry would give personal sanction which was the dismissal of Lion Air’s technical director Muhammad Asyif and management personnel of Lion Air PQ-LQP Boeing 737-8 Max. Budi said the decision was made in a bid to help the audit on the crash, and that corporation would possibly be sanctioned.

Budi Karya further mentioned he would wait for the investigation result issued by the National Transportation Safety Commission (KNKT) regarding indications of crimes. “We will follow the recommendation, if it is a crime, we will take action,” he explained.

Other than audit on the aircraft and personnel, the minister would audit the standard operational procedure of Lion Air. The review would take about five days and that the result would be announced later.

Meanwhile, Lion Air president director Edward Sirait said his side would abide by the audit procedure held by the ministry.
