TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko `Jokowi` Widodo argues that the rising deficit of the Health Care and Social Security Agency (BPJS Kesehatan) cannot be separated from technology advancements that have sparked an unhealthy lifestyle.
“I received a report stating that deadly catastrophic diseases are actually on the rise,” said Jokowi during his visit at the Indonesian hospital association congress in Jakarta today, Oct. 17.
Jokowi’s concern is not without any grounds since it corroborates with the data from BPJS Kesehatan that shows a rise in healthcare claims.
In 2017 alone, BPJS recorded claims for heart-related diseases accumulated to Rp9.25 trillion, cancer treatments at Rp3 trillion, liver failure at Rp2.2 trillion, and medical care for stroke at Rp2.2 trillion.
“Promoting a healthier lifestyle should be the main focus to maintain a better human resources quality, which can actualize people’s capacity to build the nation,” said the President.
Furthermore, President Jokowi urged every stakeholder to effectively guarantee that members of the public can receive a thorough access to healthcare services.
