TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The rupiah continues to weaken against the US dollar. At the Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar (JISDOR) today, the Garuda has slumped to trade for 14,625 per US dollar, the lowest since 2015.
"After rebounding and stabilizing in early July, the rupiah is corrected again to the 14,600/dollar range—the lowest since 2015," Febrio Kacaribu, an economic observer from the University Indonesia, told Tempo on Tuesday, Aug. 14.
On October 5, 2015, the rupiah plummeted to Rp14,604 per US dollar.
This year, the rupiah has been faced with many external factors, including the US-China trade war, the Fed Rate hike, and the current crisis in Turkey.
The Turkish lira has plunged from TRY4.99 per US dollar to TRY6.90. Febrio said the depreciation was caused by the country's fragile economy, soaring current accounts deficit, and unstable political situations.
