TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A resident in Penjaringan, North Jakarta, M. Tamran Daeng Tahang, uses bamboo to raise the 18th Asian Games flags. He reasons that besides it is cheap and can be found easily, bamboo has a historical value for him.
Tamran claimed to be the person who installed the 28 flags of countries participating in the Asian Games at the guardrail of Jalan Pluit Selatan Raya, Penjaringan, in front of the Emporium Pluit Mall.
The flags installed at the bamboo poles became viral in social media and sparked comments among the social media users.
According to Tamran, bamboo has historical value. Thus, it is unethical to insult the installation of flags with bamboo poles. “I built my house in my hometown using bamboo, my grandmother fought the colonialist using sharpened bamboo; what’s wrong with using bamboo," he said, Thursday 19 July.
Despite the criticism, Tamran plans to install more flags of countries participating in the 2018 Asian Games. The location is not only in his neighborhood but more extensively to Muara Baru and Tanjung Priok. The flagpole, of course, still uses bamboo.
“I have prepared 70 new flags to be installed, plus five banners to welcome the Asian Games,” Tamran said.
