TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Association of Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers (Gaikindo) chairman Yohannes Nangoi announced car manufacturers would have to comply with the Euro 4 emission standard as soon as September of 2018.

Petrol-powered vehicles will be affected immediately while diesel-powered vehicles will follow suit by 2020.

“Corresponding to the Environment and Forestry Ministry (KLHK) Decree No. 141 of 2009 and 2017, petrol-powered cars will have to comply with the Euro 4 emission standard as of September 2018. While diesel-fueled vehicles will be made Euro 4 mandatory in 2020,” said Nangoi today in a Ngobrol@Tempo discussion at Hotel Westin, South Jakarta.

In other words, Nangoi said, cars sold in September 2018 were cars that complied with the Euro 4 emission standard. “Cars that do not abide by the rules is barred from being sold to the public,” he said.

Yohannes Nangoi admitted he was surprised by the decision and has asked for more time for manufacturers to transition itself to the Euro 4 standard. He asked for a minimum of two years for car manufacturers to adjust numerous car components.

He added the government only gave one year for the transition. "We had a tough debate because it was impossible for us to back down. Because Indonesia is projected to comply with the Euro 4 concurrently with the opening of the Asian Games," he said.

In the press conference of the 2018 GIIAS (Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show) on July 10, 2018, Gaikindo said the nation's largest automotive exhibition would become the starting point of the Euro 4.
